What To Avoid With Natural Stone Floors

What To Avoid With Natural Stone Floors in Houston

Harsh Cleaners It is very important to keep in mind with sensitive natural stone to only use cleaners that were specifically designed for them, such as the ones we sell here. If you are considering using another cleaner on your granite, marble, travertine, limestone, slate, or other natural stone floor do your research first! These cleaners can interrupt the chemistry of the stone and destroy, scar, weaken, or stain your stone. The higher the acidity, such as in cleaners like vinegar and bleach, the worse it is for your stone. Neglected Dust While with all flooring it is important to clean and remove dirt and dust, it is especially important when it comes to your home’s natural stone floors. This is because you will track and carry around on the bottom of your shoes and feet, particles that will be pushed into the stone. This can lead to etching into the stone, as well as it can wear down the protective seal your stone floors have as a barrier of defense against etching and stains. Avoid this by dry mopping your floors regularly. The more wear you put on your floors, such as if you have heavy traffic on your floors, kids, a pet, etc.- the more frequently you should dry mop your floors. Skip The Scrubbers Lots of homeowners first instinct when they see a stain on their gorgeous stone floors is to try and scrub the stain out of the stone. However, this is the absolute worst way to handle a stain for stone floors. For regular cleaning, get a soft cloth and be gentle. If you get a stain or need a deep cleaning for another reason, contact Modern Stone Care and set up a professional cleaning that will leave your floors healthy not damaged. Skipping The Seal Whenever you have natural stone floors in your home it is imperative to have your floors sealed in order to keep them safe from etching, stains, and other damage that will affect the lifespan of your stone. Getting an initial seal on your floors will not be enough to keep them healthy for a lifetime. It is important to make sure they stay sealed over time. We can come and check the condition of your stone’s seal to see if it is thick enough to guard your stone or if it needs to be redone. Natural Stone Floor Experts […]

Natural Stone Cleaning in Houston

At Modern Stone care we work with natural stone, such as granite, limestone, marble, slate, and travertine. All of these materials are porous and require specialized knowledge, paired with a delicate touch to properly clean and preserve their natural beauty. When natural stone is not properly cleaned, maintained, or is left unsealed it becomes vulnerable to absorbing stains and spills which will lead to damage. We know your natural stone was not cheap and we want to keep it looking amazing for as long as possible to protect your investment. Let us use our years of experience and knowledge to handle the complex nature of your natural stone. Granite Floor Cleaning Houston Granite is a gorgeous and popular option in homes, especially kitchens. It is not sensitive to acid like the calcareous stones such as marble, limestone and travertine are. We often still use alkaline cleaning solutions on granite because of the fact that alkaline cleaners emulsify dirt better than acids. If the granite floor has a sanded grout component, we often will clean the floor with an alkaline solution and then follow up with a second step in the cleaning procedure. Limestone Floor Cleaning Houston Due to its acid sensitivity, limestone must be cleaned using an alkaline cleaning solution. We give the solution approximately 20 minutes of dwell time. This gives the cleaner time to emulsify the dirt that is embedded into the stone and grout. We then use an industry accepted spinner tool which provides pressure coupled with vacuum for extraction. This process also removes dirt from the top of your grout lines. Marble Floor Cleaning Houston Marble is a elegant stone that is very popular in grand entrance ways, kitchens and more. Just like limestone, due to marble’s acid sensitivity, it must be cleaned using an alkaline cleaning solution. We let the solution sit for about 20 minutes, giving it the time to emulsify the dirt that is embedded into the stone and grout. We then use the same industry accepted spinner tool which provides pressure coupled with vacuum for deep extraction. Slate Floor Cleaning Houston Slate gives a modern clean and modern touch to homes and businesses. Due to the texture and graininess of this particular stone, a good amount of dirt can build up in its crevices. Generally, we will clean slate with an alkaline cleaning solution because it is the best at emulsifying dirt.

Water Damaged Natural Stone Houston

Water Damaged Natural Stone Houston

Hurricane Harvey hit Houston in August but left standing water in many areas through the beginning of September. In the wake of all of this tragic flooding, it left many home and business owners with damaged property. If you are one of these owners, who is faced with having to rebuild, you may find yourself shuffling through the destruction asking, “Can this be restored or do I need to replace it?”    We understand that this is a trying time and that the cost of replacing everything in your home or business will be expensive. We also understand that this is a time you need to be able to work with trusted craftsmen, like us, who care about getting your life back to where it was before the storm.    Can natural stone be salvaged and restored after a flood? Is it resilient enough to stand against the penetrating flood waters? The answer is, yes. Obviously, we must take into account the condition of the stone prior to the storm. Was it already damaged? Was it regularly cleaned and maintained? These are major factors in determining if your stone can be restored.     Natural Stone, while porous in nature and sensitive to harsh chemicals and acidic substances is actually fairly resilient when it comes to taking in water. Natural stones like Travertine, Limestone and Marble are calcium based bonded stones. Standing water on top of the stone causes erosion which eats away at the integrity of the stone. The only way to combat this process is with specialty products designed to strengthen the calcium bond.     Many contractors and floor companies may want to use a pressure washer to “restore,” your floors. These are not Natural Stone experts and you should use extreme caution when dealing with them. Do your research and you’ll find that heavy pressure on a Natural Stone after damage is only going to weaken the already vulnerable material. Here at Modern Stone Care we care about Houston and want nothing more than to help you smoothly transition back into normalcy. We proudly serve The Greater Houston Area, including but not limited to Atascocita, Bellaire, Clear Lake, Cypress, Friendswood, Houston Heights, Houston, Humble, Katy, Kemah, League City, Kingwood, Memorial, Missouri City, Montgomery County, Spring, Spring Branch, Stafford, Sugar Land, Tomball and The Woodlands.
