Natural stone offers a beautiful setting in your home. It is used in many areas. Professional designers plan natural stone installations for countertops, floors, and beyond. Granite is the most popular of all natural stones for residential use. With a new installation, contractors provide simple instructions in cleaning the new floor, countertop, etc. However, after years of use and in some cases abuse, your granite surface will have to be restored.
In a recent review of homeowners with granite floors, a homeowner stated “Our granite installer told us to maintain the floor we needed to dust mop, sweep, damp mop with neutral cleaner and buff with soft buffing pad. However, ten years after installation and heavy traffic the floor has lost much of its shine. Despite following the recommendations our granite floor has worn significantly in heavy traffic areas. Over the past 10 years and lost much of its shine. What do you recommend we do?”
Certainly, this is a question most homeowners with granite and other natural stone installations face. It is usually recommended such floors be examined by a professional stone service. Homeowners should choose an experienced contractor with an effective process to restore the stone to its original luster. Upon evaluation, the contractor will decide which method of restoration will provide the most optimal result.
Natural stone cleaning and renewing companies use a variety of processes to clean granite. However, once the stone has lost its polish, there is only one means of restoration, and that is grinding the stone. Stone grinding is the oldest of all of the modern methods of restoration, was originally designed for grind-in-place thick dimensional stone.
The most-used grinding stones range from 24-grit to 1000-grit and should be used progressively in a minimum of six steps in the restoration process. After grinding and mechanical polishing is completed, the stone must be polished again with chemicals, metallic elements, or buffing compounds. Homeowners are advised to never attempt this professional skilled-based process. Always consult a professional.
